BYU Law students Erica Lovell and Jason Collyer brought this year’s coveted ABA MAC Cup to BYU Law School after winning the ABA Business Law Section’s transactional competition for law students. The ABA launched the competition in 2023 to provide law school students with opportunities to learn and apply transactional skills, mirroring the litigation opportunities students get through traditional moot court competitions.

This year’s contest began with 64 student teams competing through mock negotiations and acquisition agreement mark-ups to reach the championship in Laguna Beach, California. The final four teams competed before a panel of judges including members of the ABA’s M&A Committee, two members of the Delaware Court of Chancery, a senior partner at Sullivan & Cromwell, a member of the Texas Business Court, and the general counsel of Blackstone Private Equity. BYU Law’s team was victorious, and Erica Lovell won Best Negotiator. Congratulations to Erica and Jason, who also took home $7500 in prize money!
