AAHP was established in 1975 and is a union that represents the interests of allied health professionals in hospital and health care facilities in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are proud of our past and we look forward to the future as we continue to explore new avenues that will help make life better for our members.
AAHP's bargaining rights are established under the Public Service Collective Bargaining Act - the same legislation that governs all public sector unions in Newfoundland and Labrador. This legislation gives all unions the "right to strike."
AAHP's structure and administration is designed to allow maximum voice for its members. A voice that directs the union and sets the direction of the union. AAHP has established itself as a professional union, one that understands the wishes and concerns of the health care professionals it represents. AAHP has developed a style and reputation that distinguishes itself as a union known for integrity, credibility and professionalism.
Why AAHP?
AAHP was founded by and is run by health professionals, for health professionals. As such it reflects professional attitudes towards labour relations and understands the issues facing health professionals today.
AAHP represents health care professionals only and therefore, it is able to concentrate solely on their needs and interests.
AAHP works hard on behalf of all its members to ensure fair representation of small disciplines as well as large disciplines.
AAHP enables all members to have equal participation in all matters affecting the rights of members and the administration of the Association.
AAHP works closely with the members it represents to ensure their needs are being met.
AAHP does not believe in militant action that would interfere with the delivery of care or treatment to the patient without exhausting the entire collective bargaining process and even then, any action contemplated is brought back to the members for voting.
AAHP provides the legal advantage of a union, while trying to eliminate the inherent disadvantages of the large, complex, traditional trade unions where the concerns of professionals are often overlooked and only the voice of large numbers is heard.
AAHP represents members who are employees of the following health care boards in theProvince of Newfoundland & Labrador:
Health Care Corporation - St. John's (Eastern Health)
Avalon Institutions Board (Eastern Health)
Peninsulas Health Care Board (Eastern Health)
Government - Dept. of Health (Govt)
